From 6th Street to 1st Ave. Why we chose Austin and Minneapolis.
When you think you of startups, you likely think San Francisco. If you’re savvy, you also think Austin, Boston and perhaps New York and sprinkle of Denver here and there. But Minneapolis? We’ve had lots of curious minds ask us why we’re launching Moodfish in Austin and Minneapolis. So here’s why.

Recently, MO.com interviewed me asking about why I do what I do. The easiest way to put it is – I love building things – especially when I know it’s something that other people would find helpful. The biggest difference between what I do now and what I used to do is that I love what I do. Team Moodfish kicks ass. Our mission, our product and our vision kicks ass. In short, while we deal with challenges every day, it’s so much easier to see them as the ‘hurdles before the gold’ instead of “ugh…again….?”
So check out this fun writeup! You’ll even find out exactly why I love the consumer world.

On March 12th, we had our very first panel at SXSW. Yours truly had the opportunity to sit alongside industry bigwigs Lior Ron of Google Hotpot, Barney Pell of Bing.com and Sep Kamvar at Stanford to talk about where search is heading. We had a crowd of just over 1100 and I think we did quite well for ourselves considering our panel was at 5PM – the beginning of everyone’s happy hour. If I could do it again, I would change just one thing – leave all the product demos and launches to the end of the panel.

Last Night, Moodfish Met Its Match.

Moulin Moodfish
So, there we are… It’s beautiful outside, the moon is beaming, and the tunes are melting our minds. Kalu and his band are thrashing and representing the sprinkle of intense that represents his moodmix. I think to myself, wow … moodfish really really works! All was good in the world., until….it finally happened. A new outside element came into the picture and completely changed up the mood mix. All the moods were represented. Kalu James played live at The Belmont. (If you haven’t seen Kalu James play live, you need to make plans to see him as soon as possible.) For the most part his band has been a mix of Sunny, Mellow and Intense. Last night however, #Quirky and #Sensual met under the moonlight, and Moodfish met its match.

These are underwater trees of course.
At Moodfish, we strive to source and showcase as much local information as possible. That’s why we’re reaching out to Austin digital and print artists and musicians to showcase your work with us. This is what we mean by showcasing:
We know that moods are such a subjective thing that words alone can rarely describe the meaning behind a mood term. For example, the word intense can invoke so many different thoughts like resonant, visceral, floored. To address this, we’re working to represent our moods in a myriad of ways, a few of which include adding audio and visual representations of moods alongside each mood ‘definition.’ Each mood will have 5 pieces of mood-representative art and music to help users better understand the idea of the mood.
If you’ve got some existing work or would be interested in commissioning some mood related work for Moodfish, here’s what you need to know. First, check out the mood descriptions overview at http://blog.moodfish.com/the-moodfish-story/about_moods/
Next: Take a look at the descriptions behind each of these moods:
This is where the art and music will be featured. (The actual moodfish.com homepage will also link back to these pages!) For right now, we need to cap our contributions to 5 artists. After all, our users can’t enjoy your work if they have to navigate through hundreds of artists right? If there’s a good fit between us and the art works, then:
1) We include your work on moodfish.com
2) We attribute all the work back to you and your website so our visitors can visit your site.
3) We showcase you in our user newsletters!
If you’re interested in working with us / having your art showcased on the site, please contact us via any of the outlets here: Moodfish Contact Info.
Please include some basic background information about yourself as well as at least 1 piece of work that you feel most representative a particular mood. Down the road though, we’ll need 7 pieces of work (1 for each mood). Creating art is tough and requires a lot of talent. We respect this, which is why we want to help promote your work. Each of the artists showcased will also be highlighted in our newsletters to our users and of course wherever we can promote you while keeping the user experience as simple and easy to navigate as possible.
Look forward to hearing from you!!
